Shazad Banaras from Hatchers Solicitors’ Commercial Property Team recently led a transaction that has revived one of Northwood’s most celebrated venues, the Horse and Jockey.
Before its closure in September 2022, the Horse and Jockey was considered one of Northwood’s most important community hubs, having gained status as an Asset of Community Value. Amid rising energy prices and the increased cost of living, its owners took the difficult decision to close it down.
A local group then formed, headed by local resident Louise Paton, and aimed to revive the establishment by purchasing it through a community-wide fundraising effort.
The group, calling themselves The Friends of Horse and Jockey, instructed Shazad Banaras to undertake the purchase after funds had been secured. Speaking on the transaction, Shazad commented:
“We were able to complete ahead of schedule on 14th November. The whole project has been a huge success – the Horse and Jockey is such an important cultural hub for the people of Northwood, and I’m so pleased to have played a part in its revival. Louise and her team have also been a pleasure to work with”.
Louise Payton, head spokesperson for the Friends of Horse and jockey, said:
“Shazad was extremely diligent given the complexities of the transaction, and kept us updated throughout. His no-nonsense approach meant we completed ahead of schedule and should be ready for trading this Christmas”.
